We launched a new Basketball Profile for grade 3 and up in 2015. We have always been convinced of the importance of sports and games in school because they encompass more than just the benefit of physical activity. Access to sports and games empowers youth and promotes higher self-esteem, motivates students and enables them to attain better grades.
Basketball is a sport that children can start at an early age. Learning basketball allows children to incorporate frequent physical activity into their daily routines and contributes to overall physical well-being and fitness. Playing basketball helps children learn basic coordination and teambuilding skills with an added bonus of making new friends along the way.
Our foremost inspiration for this profile has been a person who has been amongst us as a teacher and mentor for many years, and is none other than our gym teacher JD Sanders. JD has been a role model for the children and inspired even those, initially reluctant to participate in sports, to work towards achieving their full potential. JD is able to do this by being able to see the entire spectrum of ability in children, both existing and latent, and is able to find ways in which each child can succeed. His belief in each child and the child’s potential to find enjoyment in playing the sport, has led each child to begin to incorporate this belief into his or her own sense of what’s possible.
JD Sanders has been a professional basketball player for over 16 years. He has played basketball at both a national and an international level. He has played for some of the best clubs in Spain, Holland and Belgium as and also worked as a mentor and coach for Södertälje Kings for three seasons.
JD is originally from the USA, where he grew up in the roughest parts of New York. He started playing basketball when he was the age of 13. When it was time for college studies, he went to Texas where he studied and also played college basketball at Texas Tech University. The areas of study he was most interested in highlighted children and family relationships from different perspectives. JD has carried this interest with him throughout his time as a basketball player.
Due to his work as a basketball player, JD has had the privilege to travel and live in different countries and to study and be a part of various cultures as well as to understand the problems that cultural conflicts can cause. JD has successively made use of this knowledge to increase social interaction and inclusion among his students.
JD’s goal is to meet different people and have the opportunity to give them guidance and help them make the right decisions in life. In his talks with children, JD tries to create a positive atmosphere that enables them to be inspired and uplifted, and helps them learn to find the road to their dreams.
